At LLC “Agrostar” in the village of Starogankino, Pokhvistnevsky District, breeding achievements were presented as part of the comprehensive scientific and technical project “Development of Potato Breeding and Seed Production in the Samara Region” under the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for Agricultural Development (2017–2030). The initiative serves as a practical tool for achieving the goals of the national project “Technological Support for Food Security,” focusing on creating a proprietary line of potato varieties suited for deep processing—including chips, french fries, and flakes—to reduce domestic agribusiness’s dependence on foreign planting material. The event brought together scientists, agricultural producers, and international partners, reaffirming the Samara Region’s status as a key hub for Russian potato breeding.

Several locally bred varieties, such as Julia, Alva, and Gelia, are already registered in the State Register, with Grand and Gulliver also cultivated for seed purposes across 77 hectares. New varieties like Fraya (for fries), Simona, and Lucy (for chips) are undergoing state trials, while Taira, a red-skinned variety, is awaiting submission. The enterprise also hosted Mr. N.K. Jha, Managing Director of India’s “Techniko,” representing ITC Limited, who toured the facilities and conducted taste evaluations. He pledged to promote these Russian varieties in the Indian market. Meanwhile, three Samara-bred varieties—Julia, Grand, and Alva—are being registered in India for early-market, flake-processing, and fry segments, with a broader strategy to enter Southeast Asian markets. Since 2018, state support has enabled Agrostar to build a breeding lab, a five-greenhouse complex producing over 50,000 minitubers annually, 14 hectares of covered growing areas, and a 500-ton cold storage facility—establishing a full technological chain from research to export and reinforcing the region’s agricultural competitiveness.
